Thoughts from Pastor Randy…

Go the Distance With Your Spouse

“Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord…Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her;” Ephesians 5:22 & 25

Giving your life for another human being can be one of the easiest things and one of the hardest things to do. You are probably wondering how I could say easy…

Emotions are powerful! When my emotions are running on high for my wife, then it is really easy to give my life for her… When my emotions are not so hot on her, then it is really hard to give my life for her…

God expects me as a husband to give my life up for my wife constantly. Just as following Jesus takes a choice every day, I have found that it takes a choice every day to love my wife in such a way as to give up my life for her.

I have been reading a biography on missionary Jim Elliot, in this book there is a quote where he is speaking of surrendering his life to God. He said,

“one does not surrender a life in an instant – that which is lifelong can only be surrendered in a lifetime.”

[1]

I can’t help but apply this to marriage. Having an amazing marriage doesn’t come from surrendering your life at one moment. It takes a lifetime of moments of surrendering your life to add up to an amazing marriage.

Go the distance with your spouse and continue to surrender yourself day by day.

Dad, Can We Climb the Hill

“Get yourself up on a high mountain, O Zion, bearer of good news, lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” Isaiah 40:9

Growing up I would visit my dad in Roseburg every other week. He would come get me and my three siblings and we would spend the weekend with him. Near his house was a big hill with a radio tower on it. I don’t remember who initiated the first climb up that hill. I have a hunch that it was my dad.

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic!

“Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.” Matthew 22:9

After taking a couple of road trips across the country, I have discovered where I live is one of the worst spots for traffic in the country. In order to visit family members, we have to plan to leave at certain times if we don’t want to sit in traffic for hours. The highways are always jammed during the morning and evening commute along with other times of the day!

Three Things about Traffic:

Come Back When You Can Stay Awhile

Jesus Talk

“This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.” Acts 1:11b

One of my most favorite things to do growing up was to visit my grandparents’ house. It seemed as though my grandma always knew exactly when we would arrive. Inevitably, she would be standing in the kitchen window and see us when we pulled into the driveway. Then, when we would leave, my grandma and grandpa would walk us out and then stand in the road waving to us as we drove away. My grandma would always say, “Come back when you can stay awhile.”

Dow, Nasdaq, and Seahawks

Jesus Talk

“But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” Ephesians 2:13

Today, I and some guy friends are going to the streets to tell the good news. This news is not about the stock market, the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P were up on Friday. This news is not about each middle school student at my son’s school getting a chrome book. This news is not even about the Seahawks winning yesterday.

Hot Burning Fire!

Marriage and Family

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8

Woodstove…check!   Firewood…check!   Kindling…check!   Paper…Check!   Matches…check!

This is the first time in my adult life that I have had a woodstove to heat my house. As we are getting closer to the cold season, I have taken some steps to be ready for heating my house. I had my son get the old ashes out of the wood stove. I bought a cord of wood from a guy in the neighborhood. And, I’ve got several boxes of matches!

The first attempt to build a fire was very discouraging.  It didn’t go. I put paper in there, some kindling, along with some bigger pieces of wood. It would stay lit for a little while and then go out.

Lean In For a Kiss

Jesus Talk

“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” John 10:11

This morning, I had the privilege of dropping my boys off for school. My favorite part of today was when each of my boys, before they got out of the truck, leaned their head on my shoulder for me to give them a kiss on the head.

Good Morning Davis Camp!

Jesus Talk

“And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:3

In my previous life (I’m not referring to reincarnation 😊), I would be getting up at Davis camp this morning. Davis camp is a place that I love. It is a place that my grandparents camped during their hunting trips for a span over 50+ years. Then, for the last 15+ years, Me and my family have carried the tradition.

Christian Families, Will You?

Marriage and Family

“if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

This morning I went with my wife and boys to their school to pray at the flag pole.

A Castle Far Away

Jesus Talk

“Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;” Hebrews 12:28

I love the thought of Castles!

I am fascinated by Castles! I’ve never been in a castle. I’ve never stood in front of a castle. I’ve never even driven by a Castle. I just love the thought of Castles!
