“Welcome to my money pit”, I said to the flooring guy as he got out of his car in the driveway. Popcorn ceilings, Dry rot, Nasty carpet…. the realities of buying a home that needs some love. Tonight, I am going to tear into the dry rot in the kitchen! I am anxious to get started, but fearful that I don’t know how to repair it all. Thankfully, my wife has been watching the home renovation shows! 😉

I wonder how much time Jesus followers back in the book of Acts spent working on their home? I wonder how much time they spent playing with their kids? I wonder how much time they spent doing other things compared to talking to people about Jesus?

Owning a home can be a really good thing. Playing with our kids is a necessity. Likewise, talking to people about Jesus is crucial.

Christians naturally talk to others about Jesus because He is the one they follow!

Marriage and Family

(Someone Downtown Yesterday) I don’t have to go to church to be with God…

(I replied) You’re right! God can be in one place and everywhere at the same time!

My wife and I just bought a house! We are so excited about this house because it has the space inside we were hoping for, it has the size yard we were hoping for, and it is the location we were hoping for! It’s almost as if God answered our prayers! (He did!)

Now, it’s work time! The last two days we have been scraping the ceilings to remove the popcorn texture. We have lots and lots of work to go!

We bought this house knowing that there was much work to do. We bought this house knowing that over time, it would become our home instead of the unkept house it is.

When I became a Christian by saying ‘yes’ to Jesus and accepting the free gift of salvation. I was like an unkept house. Jesus saw all my imperfections. He saw all the work that needed to be done. He saw that it would take time. And He still bought me!

Just as my wife and I started to work on the house the day we got the keys; Jesus started working on me the day He got the keys. We are working on updating our house and making it our home. Jesus is updating the unkept areas in my life and making me into His home.

The church is made up of people that Jesus is making into His home. As Jesus works in people, they come together and encourage each other to keep allowing Him to do that work.

Sometimes people want to give up. Sometimes life is so hard that people want to quit. Sometimes people stop living for Jesus and go back to a life of sin. This is where the church comes in.

The church is supposed to help people keep living for Jesus!  

So…no, you don’t have to go to church unless you really want to live for Jesus!

5 Reasons I Have My Family in Church:

1. Learn We: We (God’s People) make up the church. The church is not an individual but made up of individuals that follow Jesus.
2. Learn Bible: We need to grow in knowledge of God.
3. Learn Pray: We need to talk to God to have relationship with Him.
4. Learn Love: We need to love God and God’s people. People are not easy to love but God expects us to.
5. Learn Encouragement: We need encouragement from other believers to live for Jesus and not for ourselves.

What did I miss? Why is your family involved with the church?

I heard a young preacher say yesterday, “Your purpose in life is to live out the image of God”.

God made human beings in His image, according to His likeness. Therefore, it follows that their purpose must be to live out that image and likeness. Unfortunately, that image and likeness has been marred because of sin. Sin is so powerful that it makes it impossible to live out that image. Sin is so powerful that it causes separation between me and my Creator. Sin is so powerful that it has made me it’s slave for eternity.

But God sent His Son, Jesus! Jesus broke the power of sin! And, those who receive Jesus are given His power to live out His image!

Part of living out God’s image is proclaiming His message; the message that Jesus came to break the power that sin has over people!

                                              Jesus set me free so that I can live for Him!

Are you living out God’s image? Go tell somebody who this Jesus is!

Peanut Butter Cups…a special note…special delivery…what do these three things have in common? Put all together and they make a great way to apologize and build someone up!

Yesterday, I made a comment to my son that I was not proud of right before he left for school. I regretted saying it. Though it may have not been a BIG deal, I want to make sure that I am building my family up and not tearing them down.

There are lots of ways that the enemy is trying to tear each one of us down. As a dad and husband, I have 100% of the responsibility to build up my family. Yes, my wife and boys have responsibilities in our relationship as a family. Although, God places the highest expectations on the dad/husband.

The verse above speaks of Christians being built up. This can be applied to individual Christians, but it also can be applied to Christian families.

The Christian family is being built into a spiritual house in which the God of the universe dwells!

By the way, I did apologize to my son using the method described above…he loved it!

5 Ways to Build up Your Family:

1. Pray Regularly Together (Dinner, Before Bed, Road Trips, Everyday!)
2. Read the Bible Together Out loud
3. Affirm Each other
4. Apologize Quickly and Sincerely
5. Play Together (Go to the park, play board games, etc)

My boys and I watched part of a movie last night about a boy who received the Minnesota Twins Baseball Team as an inheritance from his grandfather. That would be amazing!

Everyone wishes they could receive an inheritance from a relative; although, maybe not a baseball team!

Not everyone realizes they have access to an inheritance. Many people are living their life either clueless to this inheritance or they simply have chosen to not take advantage of the offer. As for me, I received my inheritance!

This inheritance is not $10,000, or $100,000, or $1,000,000. This inheritance is worth all the numbers in the world and more! This inheritance is found only in Jesus Christ! It’s a REAL INHERITANCE and Jesus is the REAL DEAL!

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:27

This morning I spent some time with our pastor and his wife looking at scripture. He directed us to John 14. I have read John 14 dozens of times. Isn’t it amazing how God can speak through a verse that you have read over and over again, and then at the perfect time God speaks through that verse.

We all go through seasons of life. In this season, my wife has been out of town quite a bit. She has been driving to school. She has been driving to clinical. She has been staying overnight out of town due to the length of her days. I am so proud of my wife. I am also so looking forward to this season being over…

Lately, my heart has been troubled. If I am honest…lately, I have even been fearful… It’s not comfortable. It doesn’t feel good. It’s definitely not peace.

So, what do I do?

Jesus said that He gives peace. He says this right in the middle of a passage of scripture speaking of Holy Spirit. Apparently, I need to allow Holy Spirit to do more work in me! Jesus said that His peace is not the same as what the world offers. His peace is different. If He is the One giving it, then I better make sure that I am trying to receive it from Him and not from other sources…

A few ways that I have learned to receive Peace from Jesus:

1. Make a Choice to Not Worry (I really struggle with this)
2. Pray General Prayers of Worship to Him
3. Pray for Others (My Family, My Church, My Community)
4. Pray for Me
5. Think on Right Things (God’s Word!)

Happy Memorial Day!

Many men and women gave their lives so that I could live in a land of freedom and opportunity. Many men and women served their country by living and fighting because they believed in a better tomorrow. Many men and women hurt today because of the loss of a family member that served.

At some point, someone explained to them why it was important to fight for their country. At some point, someone explained to them the hope in freedom. At some point, someone explained to them by speaking out loud.

Thank you to those who gave their life and/or gave a family member for your country!

There is Another I would like to thank… He gave His life so that I could live in freedom. He gave His life because He believed in a better tomorrow. He gave His life for you and for me.

At some point, I need to explain to others why He is so important. At some point, I need to explain to others why my hope is in Him. At some point, I need to explain to others by speaking about Him out loud.

Explaining the good news out loud is the responsibility of every Christian!

People don’t come to believe in Jesus by watching my good living. People come to believe in Jesus when they hear the good news spoken out loud by His followers.

Are you prepared to explain out loud why your hope is in Jesus?

Yesterday morning, I heard an animal type of screach yelling so I looked out the window  and saw a raven flying close to the ground in the field behind the church with a rabbit chasing it… I thought that was the funniest thing, until I realized that the Raven was carrying one of the rabbits babies in its beak.

I wonder what the rabbit was thinking…“My Kid is Flying!”

Being a parent can be hard. You can be going along in life thinking everything is going pretty good, and then all of a sudden, your kid is being carried off…little did you know that he was being hunted in the first place.

We have a real enemy of our souls, the devil. He wants our kids. He will use any method he can to get them; usually he uses things that are attractive.

It was interesting to see the raven land about 25 feet away from the rabbit to get it to run after it, away from the baby. It looked as if it was trying to lure the momma away from the baby.

I think the enemy does this with parents. He tries to lure me away with enticing things to get my focus off protecting my boys. If he can get me far enough away, he swoops in and snatches them away.

Here are some things that help me stay alert in protecting my boys:

• Think about God’s Word Everyday
• Pray specifically for my boys Everyday
• Spend time playing with my boys Regularly
  • Playing with my boys helps me focus on them and not on me.

Having a God and others centered heart and mind will help with the attacks of the enemy!

What does Marriage, Raising Kids, and Telling People About Jesus have in common?

They can be some of the toughest things in life. I don’t recall anyone saying these things were easy. I do recall many saying that is great reward and satisfaction if you persevere.

This doesn’t mean we should give up. So often, the things in life we need to put the most effort into are the things that are the most worth doing.

What keeps you from Telling more People About Jesus?

A Few Things I do to help my courage and strength:

• Practice witnessing publicly about Jesus every week
• Read my Bible everyday
• Pray everyday

I have struggled a lot in knowing what God’s will was for me regarding specific things and at certain times of my life. During some of those struggles, I have come to realize that God wasn’t necessarily concerned about the WHAT, rather, He was and is concerned about the WHO. God is concerned about WHO I am as a person.

WHO I am dictates WHAT I do.

I am a child of God (John 1:12). I am forgiven (1 John 1:9). I am loved by God (John 3:16). I have been adopted by God (Ephesians 1:5). I was chosen by Him before He created the world (Ephesians 1:4). I am so much more because of Him!

God’s will for you and me:

1. Love Him (Mark 12:30)
2. Obey Him (John 14:21)
3. Love People (Mark 12:31)
4. Grow in His Character (2 Peter 1:5-10)
5. Tell and Teach People About Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20)

How does knowing WHO you are in Christ compel you to live your life today?
